Our mission is to make sure property is fairly and equally assessed. We work hard to make sure no one property owner shoulders more than their fair share of the county-wide valuation.
In 1969, the Homestead Exemption Act was passed to provide property tax relief to certain owners of residential property. Back then, it provided for an exemption of $800 of actual value for residences valued at $4,000 or more. The homestead exemption benefits have changed over the years and currently provide for an exemption of all or part of real property taxes for individuals 65 or over with limited income, veterans and individuals with certain disabilities.
The Douglas County Assessor/Register of Deeds office encourages any property owner in Douglas County who feels they may qualify for the Nebraska Homestead Exemption to file an application by June 30.
